Why are “regular” law-abiding people wanting to carry guns?
Everyone has some sort of preconceived notions of guns. Whether you grew up in a household where guns have been part of your family culture, or you have never touched guns before in your life, we all have our opinions on guns. And whatever opinions you may have, it’s completely understandable.
I was raised by a first-generation old-school single Korean mother who only knew what the news would say about guns. We all know that the news rarely speaks kindly on the subject. So, understandably, when she heard that her son had guns and would conceal carry daily, she was genuinely concerned and scared that something bad would happen. Or maybe now that her son had guns, he would be tempted to go out and commit crimes. But turns out, nothing bad has happened so far.
As I have been networking in our communities and teaching a wide demographic of students, I see a pattern of more and more “regular” law-abiding citizens wanting to learn how to protect themselves and stay safe. Perhaps it’s the news of crime rising in our neighborhoods closer to home than we think. Perhaps we are seeing it happen much more frequently than we would like. I know of a few people who tell me stories of their own experiences being victims of crime and the trauma that follows. My goal has never been to fear-monger, but to simply ask questions and help people understand their options. You have the right to protect yourself. You have the right to bear arms. It’s not being paranoid, but simply taking precautions in an unpredictable world.
Let me be clear. Simply owning a gun does not guarantee you safety. If you buy a gun, shoot it a couple times, and lock it up deep in your upstairs closet safe and expect to overcome any self-defense situation perfectly fine, you may want to reconsider what it means to be prepared. That being said, learning firearm safety, training consistently, and prioritizing awareness and preparedness will increase your chances of staying safe.
My goal is to empower more everyday “regular” law-abiding citizens with the knowledge, tools, and training to live their lives to the fullest. If you have taken firearm safety classes, train with your guns regularly, and stay armed, I’m proud to have you as part of our community. The more good guys with guns we have, the less bad guys with guns are likely to wreak havoc. If you feel it’s time for you to learn, to explore, or to at least give it a “shot”, reach out. Let’s meet at the range and see what it’s all about.
